What will you be doing? - About the Position

Lead Counselor is an essential part of the camp’s daily operation and Leadership Team. Their purpose is to ensure appropriate camper supervision and support with personal care & ADL. They are to support the transition of campers into Elks Camp Moore’s camp culture and environment ensuring campers participate in the programs to their fullest abilities as well as acting as a voice for the counselors to ensure that their needs and concerns are being heard. They will support the Camp Director in supervising the cabin leader and camp counselor's performance, providing evaluations, and responding to counselors' communication of issues and supporting their needs.

What you need to be GREAT at this role

  • Experience with Campers with Complex Needs

    You have previous experience working with individuals who have special needs, including those with behavioral, emotional, or developmental challenges. You understand the importance of patience, empathy, and adaptability in providing individualized support to campers.


  • ABA/RBT Certification (Preferred)

    If you are ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) or RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) certified, your expertise in behavior management and skill-building will be a valuable asset to the camp. You are well-versed in techniques that help campers develop new skills, manage behaviors, and thrive in the camp environment.


  • Strong Leadership Skills

    As a Lead Counselor, you are a role model for other staff. You possess excellent leadership qualities that inspire and motivate the team. You guide counselors in best practices for supporting campers, helping them grow in their roles.


  • Support System for Other Staff

    You’re not just leading by example—you’re actively educating and supporting your fellow staff members. Whether it’s training them on behavior strategies, teaching new skills, or offering guidance during challenging situations, you’re there to lift your team up and ensure they feel confident in their roles.


  • Behavioral Support and Problem-Solving

    You have a calm and proactive approach to handling behavioral issues. When challenges arise, you’re quick to assess the situation, utilize effective behavior intervention techniques, and guide your team on how to handle it. Your experience allows you to create a supportive and structured environment for campers, ensuring their success.


  • Teaching and Mentorship Abilities

    You’re passionate about sharing your knowledge with others. Whether it’s running staff trainings or providing on-the-job coaching, you have the ability to educate other counselors on how to better support campers with complex needs. You empower your team by giving them the tools and confidence they need to excel.

    You lead with compassion and positivity. You’re someone campers look up to and trust, and your attitude sets the tone for the entire camp. You encourage a sense of community, inclusion, and respect, ensuring that both campers and staff feel supported and valued.

Entry Requirements

1.Must be 18 years of age or older.

 

2. Must provide a physical / health form that has been signed by a medical professional. Annual health screening will be required for any staff who has a gap in their work schedule greater than 6 months between worked days.

 

3. Complete camp application including the ability to obtain three acceptable professional / character references from non-family members or friends. These should consist of previous employment, volunteer organizations, professors/teachers, sports coaches, or community members who know you well enough to provide an acceptable reference.

 

4. Must provide the camp with a voluntary disclosure form, and a USA & Home Country police/background check which includes a sex offender record verification. These checks must be completed annually for all staff members regardless if they have been employed year-round or seasonally. These checks must be clear without a history of any offenses.


 5. Ability to attend and successfully complete/pass a New Hire Training before working directly with any campers.
